Climate Activists Use Barbie Movie Scene to Protest Potential Oil and Gas Development
Climate change activists, led by Greta Thunberg, have found a unique way to protest against the UK government’s potential plans to develop the Rosebank oil and gas field. Thunberg, along with Tori Tsui, Lauren MacDonald, and Dominique Palmer, recreated a viral moment from the Barbie movie to raise awareness about the potential CO2 emissions that could result from the development.
The Rosebank oil field, located 80 miles from Shetland, is the largest untapped oil field in the UK. Concerns are growing about the environmental impact of developing this site. In a clever use of social media, the activists stood in a line, imitating a disco dance scene from the movie. Over the video, a soundbite played with Margot Robbie’s character inquiring, “Do you guys ever think about dying?” This time, the words on screen were altered to read, “Do you guys ever think about climate change?” The camera then revealed the confused expressions of Tsui, MacDonald, and Palmer, with the names of Rishi Sunak, Grant Schapps, and Equinor (the Norwegian company overseeing the development) appearing overhead.
The video was shared on Stop Cambo’s Instagram page with a caption that emphasized the need for a safe climate and affordable energy. It called on wealthier countries like the UK to halt the expansion of oil and gas production. The Rosebank oil field, if developed, would produce more CO2 emissions than the world’s 28 poorest countries combined in a year.
This creative demonstration is not the first time that Barbie has been used as a political statement. Previously, certain Barbie-themed bus stop posters that criticized government officials were ordered to be removed by Transport for London (TFL).
